Assignments Week of May 3rd

READING:
Back to our Book: In My Family

Vocabulary:
Culture: the customs, beliefs, and arts of a group of people
Chile: the fruit of a pepper plant, which is often used to make hot seasonings
Mesquite: a shrub or small tree found in the southwestern United States and Mexico; it’s wood is used to make charcoal
Barbecue: a special kind of grill or pit used for cooking outdoors
Accordion: a musical instrument with keys and hand-operated bellows
Confetti: tiny pieces of paper, often thrown during celebrations


Monday:
Review Vocabulary
All Groups: What’s in a Name? activity
Whole group do w/b 109 practice books

Tuesday: Whole Group reading of story
In my Family writing/drawing activity about an important event or tradition in their family

Wednesday: Go over the Windstock Book Report- Silent reading time
Thursday: Small Group Re-Reading of Story
Discuss and do questions
Friday: Test

Language Project: You Be the Teacher!
This is a fun project and it’s a GREAT review for language skills right before the West Test.
Basically, each student will become the Language Teacher. They will each get a language skill such as nouns, adjectives, etc. And they will have to “teach” it to the class. They will come up with a mini lesson and a little activity- maybe a game or a “test” as well. They really love this one!

Also- for about 15 minutes before lunch we will be continuing to play our book report games


SPELLING:

Math: Measurement
(We will have to include symmetry in the mornings before lunch this week. We are just out of time, but luckily symmetry is quick to pick up)

Monday: Units of Length:
Intro to using a ruler- label ruler, measure a few things in the room and do w/s 21 in class- brainpop H/W: Measurements in my life and 16-1
Tuesday: Units of Weight:
Intro to units of weight- watch brainpop- use scales to weigh different objects- w/s 34
H/W: 16-3
Wednesday: Capacity:
Intro- brainpop- lab filling many different things like beakers, jugs, etc and measuring their capacity H/W: 16-2
Thursday: Measuring Temperature:
Intro- brainpop- go outside/inside in different areas and take the temperatures and read them- H/W 16-11
Friday: Measurement Review
Big review of all the measurement skills we learned and reteaching if needed

SCIENCE: Plant and Animal Cells
This week we will be continuing plant and animal cells.
Monday: Make Edible Animal Cells J
Tuesday- Thursday: Create a Cell song- it can be rap, country, jazz, whatever you want. Make up your own tune or use the tune of your favorite song, but the song must educate us about Plant and Animal Cells
Friday: Present and sing our song- I may just record you and share on our blogJ


SS: Economy Unit:
We will be participating in an economy unit. We will be learning about money and banking, and jobs, etc.
This is a fun unit- but it could take about 2 weeks to complete!
